It’s really important that you know who Jesus is for you. Your testimony is not what you were like before you got saved; that’s your history.
Your testimony is: “This is what God is like for me all the time. This is what I’m discovering. This is what I’m enjoying. This is who God is for me. This is my testimony of the nature of God in my life and I have physical, tangible evidence of the nature of God in my life. I can tell you story, after story, after story, after story, after story. I have too much evidence. I know what God is like.” (From Graham Cooke's teaching series- A Certain Sound)

Does it mean just lots of praying and not anything else? Is it that we just bite our lip and suffer through the problems of life while doing the best we can? Is it an excuse for God to not answer our prayers the way we think they should be done?
I think we first need to look at what prayer is in the Bible and the life of a believer. Always remember that prayer is not informing God of something he doesn’t already know. Sometimes we can pray prayers that we think are giving God an inside track to some mysterious knowledge that only we have. When we realize that God knows what we need even before we need it, we can interact with him on a “promises” level instead of just an “informational” level. There are promises for every area of life in the Bible to be successful in all areas of life. From mental stability to healthy relationships to true success in business and life in general. So if it’s not the problem of God’s knowledge of our situation and it is not the promises of the Bible that cause us to have issues with “waiting on God” then maybe it’s about us. Think of the times you have used the term “waiting on God” in a sentence. It was probably never in the context of everything going well in life with no concerns physically, mentally or financially. I am sure it was said dealing with conflict of some kind and wondering why trouble has hit in life. If it’s true that our waiting on God is in times of conflict maybe we need to consider a different approach. Maybe it is not so much about us waiting on God as it is God waiting on US to just submit to his will without worry. I am not saying that we just accept what is happening and not pray about situations that occur in life, but actually just the opposite. Instead of wasting prayers and asking God “why” something is happening maybe we need to start asking God “what” are you trying to teach us through the storms of life. It is asking God for him to show us his heart in situations more than just having him solve problems. One other thing to consider in the gyrations of life is if our impatience is directly correlated to how much we trust God. If we trusted God as much as we said we do, then the trials and temptations of life should not bother us because we know that we are operating within a surrendered life that has given him full control. This brings up the importance of spending time with God not just when we need something from Him. When we make time for God the Bible says that we will find him and develop a deep relationship that will be bigger than the problems in our life. When we get to heaven I can say that one of two things will happen. Either I will have God’s perspective on my life and go, “Huh. I get it” when I see painful life situations and all the questions that came along with those times or I will be in such magnificent glory that I won’t even care about what happened here on earth. Waiting on God is not just a religious platitude nor is it an excuse for God to get away with whatever he wants to but something so much more. Think of it as a time of perfecting our character and just maybe giving God an opportunity to show up and show off. Waiting on God can be an amazing time of learning to trust His plan in the middle of chaos and then looking back on times of despair and thanking God for coming through for us and giving us some help with our character. At Rocky Mountain CTN, we are praying for you in the good times and bad. The Bible doesn’t promise that when we start following Jesus that everything will be perfect but that we can have perfect peace that actually surpasses every bit of our understanding. (There are group rates available) This morning I woke to news that Billy Graham had died at the age of 99. I have always been fascinated with the fact that most people were not turned off by his message of the gospel and would actually embrace him and his teachings. He was not watering down what he believed whenever he would speak or make special allowances for people who disagreed with the Bible. He even carried the title “America’s Pastor” from not just people in the church.
Then I thought of his lifestyle and how he was known around the world: as a man of integrity. Never can I remember a headline that mentioned him embezzling money or being inappropriate with funds from his ministry or a news story about how he was caught in some illicit affair with a woman or that he was seen stumbling out of a party doing or saying/quoting something that he didn’t remember and that was offensive. Of course, I am not saying that Reverend Graham was perfect and I am sure he had his faults, but it seemed like he was concerned about his “non-religious” actions and how people saw him because it would affect the Gospel he represented. So I think the answer in how to minister the Gospel, which is FULL of opposition to the current culture we live in but carries all of the answers to life, is to not just think about our religion but our personal relationship with Jesus. When we recognize that people will not care about what we say about God until they see how we VALUE that relationship, we will have a much greater influence on culture and infusing the love and purposeful direction of Christ in people’s lives. Today, every single believer in Jesus needs to take an inventory as to how we are viewed and if we are living a life that is concerned with how Jesus is seen through us as much as the words we speak about Him. If we are using social media platforms to try and belittle people we disagree with and make sure they know that we are right and they are wrong instead of pausing before reacting to everything. That we are leading with LOVE for people and not just trying to shove the truth of the Gospel down people’s throats. (By the way, leading with love doesn’t reduce the truth of the Bible and actually amplifies it to people because it doesn’t happen as much as it needs to). Maybe we need to reach out to someone we possibly offended and make it right to bring alignment in life. It may be a great time to get a couple of accountability partners in an area of personal weakness to make sure you are actually living the life you think you are in your mind. With the passing of a man like Reverend Graham, we need to evaluate our actions and tighten up areas of our life that we may think are irrelevant to the words we speak about Jesus. If we want to be operating at maximum capacity in our Christianity we need to even consider our life as a whole and not compartmentalize our relationship to Jesus and our relationship to people. "Therefore through Jesus let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name." Lifting up your hands and thanking God is spontaneous and easy when your prayer was answered or you just received a wonderful blessing. “Yes, thank you Father for this financial windfall!” Maybe you came close to being in a fatal accident, but God miraculously saved you. Or your mother found Jesus as her personal Savior and was healed of a fatal disease. But there are times you don’t feel like lifting your hands to praise and thank God, yet you do anyways. Perhaps you feel discouraged because everything is going wrong and your life looks like a huge mess. You can’t hold back the tears and it might take some time. Yet, you decide to lift your hands and thank God for being in the situation with you. You begin to praise Him even though you really don’t feel like doing it. In the middle of the mess you are going through, you praise Him that He is your righteousness in spite of all the mistakes you have made. You thank Him for his grace, and that His peace will fill you up and calm the craziness in your life. God sees and appreciates such times when, despite feeling so discouraged, you thank and praise His name. In fact, your thanks and praise during such times is more highly prized by God then the good times because you have just been blessed. And when you choose to thank Him for His unfailing love, and His faithfulness to deliver, protect and provide for you even when you don’t see the blessings yet, before long, you will find yourself experiencing and enjoying the blessings! So lift your hands and praise the Lord, for He is good, and His mercy endures forever!
